Human 3D Thyroid Microtissue Model

Measure direct thyroid hormone disruption with the first hormone-competent, human cell-based in vitro model

A physiologically relevant in vitro model for assessing endocrine disrupting compounds

Current approaches for screening thyroid hormone disruption often rely on multiple single-target assays, limiting their ability to evaluate the integrated effects of chemicals on thyroid hormone synthesis. Our Human 3D Thyroid Microtissue Model is the first physiologically relevant in vitro model that enables direct measurement of functional thyroid hormone synthesis from intact human thyroid follicles. Generated from cryopreserved primary human thyrocytes, the microtissues reproducibly secrete thyroglobulin (TG) and synthesize thyroxine (T4), providing functional endpoints for evaluating thyroid-disrupting chemicals and drug candidates. The model supports endocrine disruption research, thyroid safety assessment, and mechanistic studies using a single, human-relevant assay.

The human 3D thyroid microtissue model is available via our in vitro assay services.

  • Cultures last 14+ days, accommodating long-term exposure studies

Benefits

  • Most physiologically relevant model for assessing human thyroid hormone disruption
  • Reduces reliance upon and costs associated with animal studies
  • Compatible with microphysiological systems (MPS)
  • Identification of thyroid-disrupting compounds
  • Autoimmune disease modeling
  • Thyroid disease modeling
  • Thyroid drug efficacy studies

How it works

The human 3D thyroid microtissue model generates reproducible human-relevant results that predict the potential for compounds to disrupt thyroid function. Thyroid microtissues retain multiple pathways for T4 synthesis, enabling the study of mechanisms of hormone disruption.

inhibition

A dose-dependent T4 inhibition response was observed for chemicals known to inhibit different molecular targets within the T4 synthesis pathway.
